Surel’s Place Residency, March 2019
Alluvium: Sifting the Sandbox of Selfhood
In March 2019, Matthew completed a residency at Surel’s Place, located in Boise, Idaho. In 21 days, Matthew finished 100 drawings, 30 paintings and 2 sculptures. Part of the 100 drawings process is letting go of the ‘masterpiece’ mindset and simply letting creativity flow, working through ideas and not necessarily technique. Matthew owes a debt of gratitude to San Juan Island artist Marsha McAllister for teaching him the 100 drawing/30 painting method.
