Matthew’s 2D work is a departure from the refined and laborious use of many sculptural mediums and serves a vehicle for quick explorations often taking forms akin to abstract expressionism or as loose mechanical diagrams and compositional studies for his sculpture. He is often found painting watercolors in a number of sketchbooks, assembling found objects at the beach and not infrequently organizing random grains of salt, pepper, crumbs, straw wrappers and utensils into compositions at the end of a meal.
